The National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) in Nampula has seized 30 kilograms of methamphetamine at the home of a citizen presumed to be Mozambican in the Namutequeliua neighbourhood, Muhala administrative post, Nampula city.
This is the first drug seizure to be registered in the provincial capital city.
The operation took place on June 19 in Block Number 7 of the Unidade Comunal de Namalate where, according to SERNIC spokesperson Enina Tsinine, a tip-off from residents brought the goings-on to the attention of the institution’s operatives.
“Everything happened on the morning of the 19th of the current month. We had already been receiving information about the existence of drugs in one of the homes in this area, and subsequent investigation work culminated in the indication of this property,” Tsinine said from the site of the seizure. “The drug was hidden in plastic buckets and buried at the home of the citizen, who is currently at large.”
The owner and security guard of the house where the drug was found fled when they realized that SERNIC was on to them, Tsinine continued, but the narcotics and a vehicle belonging to the accused were seized.
The SERNIC spokesperson said that the investigation was pursuing a normal course with the aim of apprehending and holding accountable those involved in the trafficking of such a quantity of drugs.
“The citizen, now a fugitive, is of Mozambican nationality and the name we have so far is unique, but for security reasons concerning the secret nature of the investigation, we cannot share it at this time,” Tsinine said. “The citizen lived with only his guard but, according to information received from the population, this was at night a very busy residence.”
Tsinine also reported that the drugs were dig up with the help of neighbours.
