The Mozambican health authorities on Thursday reported 29 new cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease and 23 recoveries.
According to a Thursday press release from the Ministry of Health, 16 of the new cases were men and 13 were women. 25 were Mozambican citizens and four were foreigners (in line with the Ministry’s standard practice, their nationalities were not disclosed). Four of the cases were children under the age of 15, including a one year old infant. The oldest case was 65 years old,
Six of the new cases were from Maputo city, six from Sofala and five from Gaza. There were also three cases each from Tete, Zambezia and Inhambane, two from Niassa and one from Nampula. No cases were reported from the other three provinces.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,370,614 people have been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 772 of them in the previous 24 hours. 743 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 29 who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 229,674.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) was much the same. rising slightly from 3.64 per cent on Wednesday to 3.76 per cent on Thursday.
Three Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Wednesday, one in Maputo city and two in Niassa, and two new cases were admitted, one in Niassa and one in Sofala. The number of people under medical care in the Covid-19 wards fell from 12 on Wednesday to six on Thursday. Three of these patients were in Maputo city, with one each in Cabo Delgado, Zambezia and Inhambane.
The Ministry release reported the death from Covid-19 of an 83 year old man in Sofala. However, this is clearly a mistake since the same death had already been reported in the Ministry’s Wednesday press release. The total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique thus remains 2,216.
The 23 people who made a full recovery from Covid-19 were all from Sofala. The total number of recoveries now stands at 227,192, which is 98.92 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 rose from 256 on Wednesday to 262 on Thursday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Sofala, 70; Zambezia, 60; Maputo city, 40; Gaza, 26; Nampula, 19; Tete, 15; Inhambane, 15; Cabo Delgado, Niassa and Maputo province, five each; and Manica, two.
The Ministry release also reported that over the previous 24 hours, for the fifth day running, there were no vaccinations against Covid-19, even though all the vaccination posts throughout the country are supposed to be open seven days a week. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease still stands at 14,612,271, which is 96.1 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
