The Mozambican health authorities on Sunday reported a further 24 cases of the Covid-19 respiratory disease and 45 recoveries.
According to a Sunday press release from the Ministry of Health, 13 of the new cases were men and 11 were women. Eight were children under the age of 15, and the oldest patient was 70.
16 of the cases (67 per cent) were from Gaza, five were from Sofala, two from Maputo city, and one from Tete. There were no new cases from any of the other seven provinces.
Since the start of the pandemic, 1,364,198 people had been tested in Mozambique for the coronavirus that causes Covid-19, 460 of them in the previous 24 hours. 436 of these tests yielded negative results, and the 24 who tested positive raised the total number of positive cases diagnosed in Mozambique to 229,375.
The positivity rate (the percentage of people tested found to be carrying the virus) fell from 9.91 per cent on Saturday, to 5.22 per cent on Sunday.
Two Covid-19 patients were discharged from hospital on Sunday, one in Niassa and one in Inhambane, and one new case was admitted, also in Inhambane. The number of patients under medical care in the Covid-19 wards fell from 10 on Saturday to nine on Sunday. Three of these patients were in Niassa, with one each in Cabo Delgado, Zambezia, Manica, Sofala, Inhambane and Maputo city. None of these patients were in intensive care.
No further deaths were reported on Sunday, and so the total Covid-19 death toll in Mozambique remained 2,215.
Of the 45 recoveries, 27 were from Maputo city, 12 from Zambezia, and six from Inhambane. The total number of recoveries rose to 226,745, which is 98.85 per cent of all cases of Covid-19 ever diagnosed in Mozambique.
The number of active cases of Covid-19 fell from 432 on Saturday to 411 on Sunday. The geographical distribution of the active cases was as follows: Gaza, 90; Sofala, 86; Zambezia, 66; Nampula, 38; Inhambane, 31; Tete, 29; Cabo Delgado, 26; Maputo city, 20; Niassa, 13; Maputo province, eight; Manica, four.
Although the Covid-19 vaccination posts are supposed to be open every day, including Saturdays and Sundays, the Ministry release reported no vaccinations at all on Sunday. The number of people fully vaccinated against the disease currently stands at 14,597.414, which is 96 per cent of all citizens aged 18 and above.
