The company Água das Região de Maputo (AdeM) has been supplying drinking water 24 hours a day, since Friday, March 27, to around 13,000 customers in the cities of Maputo, Matola and the municipal village of Boane, in Maputo province.
This is the result of a “24-Hour Water Supply Project” organised within the Integrated Accelerated Loss Reduction Programme and aimed at providing round-the-clock water supply to a total of 30,000 customers by the end of this year.
Matola Operational Area director João Francisco said that the aim was to supply water to about 30,000 customers in the Djonasse, Djuba, Matola-Rio, Beleluane, Trevo, Machava-Sede, Acordos de Lusaka and Tchumene neighbourhoods, plus the Laulane and the Vila Olímpica, Bairro Central C, Alto Maé and Costa do Sol operational areas.
“This year, we plan to cover another 17,000 customers in our portfolio, and expect to have 30,000 customers receiving water 24 hours a day by the end of the year.”
“Our expectation by 2023 is to have 200,000 customers with continuous water supply, representing approximately 50 percent of our customer portfolio,” Francisco explained.
Djuba neighbourhood resident Isabel Zandamela said that 24-hour water supply was already a reality for her. “This initiative will help people who are can’t afford mineral water, as we now have drinking water for consumption. And, as part of the new coronavirus preventions measures, we need constant water supply to wash our hands,” Isabel said.
Another beneficiary, Félix António, said he was pleased that AdeM was supplying water to neighbourhood residents 24 hours a day, and that this would improve the quality of life.
“I am pleased that they are providing water without interruption. We didn’t have this benefit before. Now it is a reality, and the water comes out clean24/7. It is a reason for celebration,” he said.
AdeM’s Loss Reduction Programme aims to reduce losses in different sectors from 50 per cent to 19 per cent by 2023.
