Mozambican authorities expect 225,000 travellers, both Mozambican and foreign, to enter the country over Easter, and are preparing border posts to respond to the flow of migrants during this period, Mozambique Customs said yesterday.
“In terms of the number of people we expect to enter our territory, by the 5th [of April], we estimate 225,000 travellers,” Director General of Mozambique Customs, Taurai Tsama, told journalists at the launch of ‘Operation Easter’.
Of this number, around 8,000 are Mozambican miners working in South Africa, Tsama added.
Tsama said that the country’s main border crossing with South Africa, Ressano Garcia, would remain open 24 hours a day, while the others would adjust their schedules “depending on demand”.
Tsama added that a multi-sectoral team, including members of the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), had been activated to respond to the movement of people and goods typical of the Easter period.
Operation Easter will run until April 5th, with the expected peak being Easter Sunday, March 31.
