Two hundred trees of various species were planted this Saturday along Eduardo Mondlane and Joaquim Chissano avenues in the country’s capital as part of the ‘Caring for Our Common Home’ initiative.
The environmental conservation project is promoted by the Mozambican Episcopal Commission for Justice and Peace in partnership with Standard Bank and the Municipal Council of Maputo.
Maputo City Councillor for Spatial Planning, Environment and Urbanisation Silva Magaia used the occasion to highlight the need to replace the trees with a view to mitigating the negative impacts of climate change.
The Archbishop of Maputo, Dom Francisco Chimoio, castigated those citizens who had previously removed newly planted trees, calling for everyone to get involved in preserving the environment.
Launched last September, the ‘Caring of Our Common Home’ initiative aims to plant more than 1,000 trees along 20 thoroughfares in the Mozambican capital.
The @LaudatoTree movement was inspired by Pope Francis’ encyclical letter, Laudato Sì: On Care for Our Common Home, which calls on humanity to care for our environment, the climate and those most affected by climate change impacts https://t.co/B1qW7IzNvY
