Mozambique: 'Time to depoliticize the CC' - Bar Association

This year will see the start of the construction of ten district-level penitentiary establishments across the country at a cost of just over 2.7 billion meticais (around US$42.2 million at current exchange rates).
The project is part of the presidential initiative ‘One District, One Decent Penitentiary Establishment’, which foresees the construction of 63 penitentiary units country-wide.

The Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs has already mapped the prisons to benefit from the work.
Minister Helena Kida added that the plan also covers some open penitentiary centres, such as the Centro Penitenciário Aberto de Massindla, in Matutuíne district, Maputo province, which is in an advanced state of dilapidation.
The country currently has about 157 penitentiary establishments, spread over regional, provincial and district institutions.
