Isabel Albino, a native of Dere district in southern Zambézia, was transferred from the local health centre to Quelimane Central Hospital with a history of childbirth complications, and admitted to gynaecology emergency services late on Thursday (20-05) according, to Jornal Visão.
Mara Gune, who is in charge of the maternity unit, explained that Isabel is a first-time mother, and that the birth took place starting at 00:25 a.m. on Friday. Three babies, all girls, were delivered by Caesarean section. The first two weighed 1.50 kg and the last 1.60 kg. All three are now receiving post-natal care in the nursery.
“This is an atypical case that needed a lot of attention, since multiple pregnancies are usually accompanied by complications that put both babies and the mother at risk. It was a great challenge for colleagues attending on the labour,” Gune said.
Mother Isabel said she was happy to have had the experience, even if a bit overawed at her new status.
“I am very happy with this great blessing. I did not expect to have three babies all at once, taking into account that, even during pregnancy, no-one noticed. At the moment, the challenge I face is very big, since I am lacking in conditions to guarantee their assistance,” the new mother-of-three said.
This is the first time the hospital has registered an 18-year-old giving birth to triplets.
