A 29-year-old man who returned to Inhambane from Maputo city about two weeks ago fell ill on Wednesday of last week (May 6), and went to Inhambane Provincial Hospital to seek medical treatment.
Several tests were carried out, including one for malaria, which came back negative. A sample was collected for the new coronavirus test and sent to the National Institute of Health laboratory in Marracuene. On Monday (May 11), it was confirmed that he was indeed infected with the Covid-19 coronavirus.
In the intervening five days, however, the patient had maintained contact with his friends and family. Eighteen of these have now been identified, and samples collected from some of them. Of these, eight are family members with whom he lives.
Right up until around 2:00 p.m. on Monday, the young man was seen circulating with friends at the Mafureira market, one of the busiest in Inhambane. The Provincial Director of Health in Inhambane, Naftal Mathusse told ‘O Pais’ that, once confirmation came through, the young man was taken home, where he remains to this time.
The young man and his family are currently in isolation at home.
