A 15-seat semi-collective passenger transport (‘chapa’) was stopped by police in Manhiça district, Maputo province, on Saturday with 37 passengers on board.
The 30-kilometre trip between 3 de Fevereiro to Ilha Josina Machel would have gone normally had the Traffic Police (PT) not stopped the mini-bus.
The PT agent involved was surprised by the number of passengers on board and, since she was responsible for raising awareness among passengers and reminding them of the recent accident in Manhiça, asked: “You recall that there was an accident at the Xinavane intersection; why do you accept this?”
The driver was fined, spokesman for the Traffic Police in Maputo Province Rodrigues Tchabana said.
“As a driver, he has a problem with his driving license – he does not have a licence to carry out that activity. He must have a driving licence in the category of public services, but he doesn’t and was therefore fined for lack of the category and for overcrowding [his mini-bus],” Tchabana reported.
Tchabana called on the public to report incidents like this. “We want to appeal to everyone to denounce this practice in semi-collective passenger transport,” he concluded.
