President Filipe Nyusi conducted the Youth and Employment Secretariat (SEJE) award ceremony for ‘young creatives’ in the areas of entrepreneurship, artistic innovation and technological innovation in Dondo, Sofala province.
The award jury was led by the writer Mia Couto, who related how the jury had proposed to SEJE that prizes be given to five contestants in each of the three categories instead of the three provided for in the contest rules.
Mia Couto highlighted the presence of proposals and winners from all over the country, the participants representing Mozambique in its uniqueness, and not only its province or district.
President Nyusi remarked on the difficulty that the jury had had in determining the winners, which meant that young Mozambicans were creating more and more. The president spoke mentioned young people he had met during presidential visits to Maputo and Cuamba, who had undertaken on their own initiative to find creative solutions to their problems and feed their families.
Nyusi also noted that funds allocated to support youth initiatives were allocated in advance, so that they did not arrive, as he put it, “after the end of the sowing season”.
The president challenged SEJE to continue its ‘Emprega’ initiative, with a view to generating more jobs and self-employment. To young people, his appeal was not to waste programmes like ‘Sustenta’, which aim to boost agriculture in Mozambique.
President Nyusi took the opportunity to congratulate Mia Couto on his recent international award, which, he said, shows that Mozambican literature has international standing, and that Mozambique has the capacity to generate knowledge appreciated at the global level.
