Bad weather in southern Mozambique has downed 144 medium-voltage pylons since Sunday, and 20,000 customers remain without electricity, Electricidade de Moçambique (EDM) announced this Tuesday (29-10).
According to the state-owned electricity company, the situation mainly affects the provinces of Gaza and Maputo, with the electricity supply having in the last few hours been restored to some of the almost 50,000 customers initially affected.
“EDM technical teams are currently on the ground aiming to restore the normal supply of electricity to the affected areas as soon as possible,” a company statement reads.
In an initial assessment on Monday (28-10), EDM reported 61 medium voltage pylons being down, interrupting the supply of electricity to 49,800 customers in the south of the country.
The cause is the bad weather that has been felt since Sunday, with heavy rain, wind and thunderstorms. EDM has appealed for strict observance of prevention and safety measures in the affected areas.
