The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR) of Mozambique, Beatriz Buchili, said on Tuesday that 1,439 persons were sentenced to effective imprisonment in 2020 for disobeying state of emergency regulation imposed due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Beatriz Buchili was speaking during the presentation of her annual summary, today and Thursday, in the Assembly of the Republic.
The crime of disobedience to the state of emergency also led to the sentencing of a further 844 defendants to the payment of fines, 81 to the provision of socially useful work and 46 to a suspended sentence, the head of the Public Prosecution Service added.
Four hundred and one defendants were acquitted and 37 are awaiting trial, she said.
“Unfortunately, during the implementation of the state of emergency, we registered excessive actions by some authority figures, some constituting the commission of disciplinary and criminal offenses, warranting due procedures,” Buchili declared.
In total, she continued, 2,896 disobedience cases were opened, the majority in the northern province of Nampula, with 856 cases, followed by Maputo (784) and Gaza (302).
Commercial establishments were fined and closed in various parts of the country for violation of the restrictions imposed in the context of the state of emergency, Buchili reported.
Mozambique was under a state of emergency from March to September 2020, as part of the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic, after which the state of public calamity that still prevails was declared.
Mozambique has an accumulated total of 814 deaths due to the new coronavirus, and 69,762 cases, of which 92% have recovered.
