A 14.year-old Grade 9 student living in Malema district, Mutuali administrative post, has left home because she was allegedly being forced to marry before she was of age.
According to the girl, the story began when her mother was discharged from the Mutuali Health Centre, and her aunt, who regularly sent food to the centre, told the girl that she had to marry a male nurse working there.
With her eyes full of tears, the girl said that she left Mutuali with the help of the sisters, since the decision of the girl’s parents was that she should marry, even if she didn’t want to, and if not, she must leave the house.
“I left home because even my mother, when she was discharged from the health centre, said that I had to marry a nurse who had helped her when she was hospitalised there. When I refused, I was expelled from my own home,” Sifa said.
This situation concerns the sisters of the Mother of God nunnery in Nampula, in the person of Madre Maria, who condemns the behaviour of the girl’s parents, and is asking the government for sterner measures to combat premature marriage.
