Mozambique: More water for the population of Diaca administrative post

Fourteen teachers in Vilankulo district, in the southern Mozambican province of Inhambane, have been suspended from their duties since their employment has not been approved by the Administrative Tribunal (AT), the body responsible for checking the legality of public expenditure.
This is an extraordinary and cruel piece of red tape, since the teachers were hired through a public tender in 2023 and started working in June 2024. They worked for eight months without any pay, while waiting for their approval to be issued by the AT. They had no reason to believe that this approval would not be forthcoming.
According to the independent daily “O País”, these professionals are now facing a human and professional drama after they accumulated debts believing that they would be paid by the state.
They resorted to indebtedness in order to cover basic needs such as food, accommodation and clothing.
“We were called upon to start work with the promise that the administrative process was under way and that everything would be regularized quickly. We believed in the state administration. We did our best in the classroom, and now we’re being discarded as if we never existed”, said one of the teachers.
Another teacher asked “how is it possible that the same state that put us to work is now turning its back on us? I taught children with dedication, making up for the lack of materials, travelling long distances to get to school, and now I’m on the street. It’s revolting.”
Trust in the system led many of these teachers to reorganize their lives based on the expectation of wages that never came.
“I believed that, after being unemployed for so long, this was the chance to finally support my family. I borrowed money from friends and family to buy food and pay the rent, thinking that everything would be compensated by my wages. Now I’m out of work and have debts I can’t pay off”, one of the teachers said.
