The Centre for Democracy and Development (CDD) on December 14 and 15, 2022, held graduation ceremonies for 120 young people from the Chimbunila and Cuamba Youth Hubs in Niassa province. Young graduates were trained in skills such as Civic Engagement, Conflict Resolution, Leadership, 21st Century Skills and Entrepreneurship and Community Development Projects.
These activities take place as part of the Social Cohesion programme in Northern Mozambique. The initiative aims to contribute to the strengthening of social cohesion and encourage the civic engagement of young people and women in social, political and economic spaces, contributing to the improvement of local governance.
The training of the first 60 young people selected in the District of Chimbunila took place between the 6th and 10th of September, 2022, and in Cuamba, the training of the selected young people took place between the 13th and 17th of September. As a result of the training, the empowered youngsters are already carrying out engagement activities with the local authorities and preparing the community development projects that will be implemented in the districts.
In Cuamba, the graduation ceremony took place in the district government session hall and was chaired by Cuamba Administrator João Júlio Manguiji and other members of the district government, with the participation of civil society representatives.
Administrator Manguiji congratulated the young graduates on having successfully completed the training and challenged them to put into practice the knowledge they had acquired. He exhorted the young people to assume their role as leaders, and contribute to the development of the district through the promotion of social cohesion, in a context of the growing threat of the violent extremism plaguing the province of Cabo Delgado since October 2017, with a tendency to spread to Niassa and Nampula.
Finally, the Cuamba district government reiterated its willingness to continue collaborating in the implementation of the Social Cohesion programme.
In Chimbunila district, the graduation ceremony took place in the government session hall and was chaired by district Permanent Secretary Rui Manuel da Fonseca Parsotam, with the participation of the Director of District Services for Economic Activities, Dr Francisco Machono.
In his intervention, Secretary Parsotam congratulated the young people not only for being selected to participate in the training, but also for successfully completing it. In turn, Director of Services Machono highlighted the numerous opportunities and potential of the district, noting that young people already had the necessary tools to maximize them. Within the scope of financing entrepreneurial initiatives, he urged the CDD to monitor young people, providing the necessary technical support for their success.
The Social Cohesion Programme is implemented with the support of Swiss Cooperation. An initiative led by civil society (CDD, IESE and MASC), it aims to strengthen social cohesion in Northern Mozambique. Its main target groups are young people and women, seen as “agents of change” both individually and collectively. Collective change agents also include public institutions that have an interest, capacity and ideas to contribute to economic, political and social inclusion, and improving state responsiveness and service delivery.
