About a week after returning to school, the first case of students infected with the coronavirus have been registered in Inhambane.
Twelve students are infected, nine of whom are on internship in Vilankulo district from the Polytechnic Institute of Maputo.
The students are asymptomatic, but were tested as a preventative measure, confirmation that they were infected coming last Sunday. The students have had to suspend their internship, and the school was notified, in order to proceed with the testing of all students.
Sônia Mahesso, of the Provincial Directorate of Health in Inhambane, says the province is no longer receiving students for professional internships without a negative coronavirus test result.
The other three positive results, from the Homoine district, have nothing to do with the return to face-to-face teaching, and were detected during active surveillance at the district health centre.
During the process of gathering contacts for screening, it was discovered that the three students had all attended the same funeral ceremony, almost certainly where they contracted the virus.
The health sector says it is monitoring the situation in both schools, to prevent them becoming sources of Covid-19 contamination.
