11,000 people are in need of aid in the Hucula administrative post, in Namuno district, in the northern Mozambican province of Cabo Delgado, according to Wednesday’s issue of the independent newssheet “Mediafax”.
Two Hucula villages, Murameia and Pararane, were attacked by groups of islamist terrorists over the past fortnight.
Frightened villagers have fled to areas considered safe, notably the district capital, Namuno town.
An estimated 11,000 people from Hucula need urgent food aid and shelter, but the district government says that it has no resources, and does not know how to assist the people displaced from Hucula.
In an interview with Radio Mozambique, the District Administrator, Felisbela Lazaro, said that the local government cannot provide the various forms of support the Hucula displaced need.
Lazaro is thus urging national and international donors to step forward with assistance.
There is a desperate need for shelter. Lazaro said that, even before the latest raids, Namuno town had been accommodating displaced people from other parts of the province.
Lazaro said this situation led to gross overcrowding. She cited the case of one household in Namuno town that was accommodating 100 people in a single building
