Eleven individuals were recently arrested in possession of just over 60 kilograms of heroin and methamphetamine in the administrative posts of Lunga and Matibane in the coastal district of Mossuril, in Nampula province.
The drugs were being transported on motorbikes to the city of Nampula.
Two of the eleven individuals arrested are from Tanzania and the rest are Mozambicans, who confessed their involvement in the crime but refused to identify the owner of the drugs.
During the public presentation to the press, some of those arrested stated that the drugs were acquired from third parties and that they intended to sell them to ensure their livelihood.
One of the Tanzanian citizens arrested said that he arrived in the country as a tourist and that he used a vehicle belonging to his brother, unaware of the presence of the drugs inside the vehicle.
Among the Mozambicans arrested, two are public servants, one a driver for the Monapo Municipal Council and the other an employee of INAMAR, an institution responsible for the inspection and legalization of vessels on the coastal strip.
The spokesperson for the National Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC), Enina Tsinine, said that the municipal driver was arrested in flagrante delicto in Lunga, when he was trying to transport the drugs to the city of Nampula, where he would deliver them to people whose names she refused to reveal.
According to the investigations conducted by the authorities, the drugs were acquired for around 650,000 meticais and the intention was to resell them for 120,000 meticais “per bowl”.
