The National Inspection of Economic Activities (INAE) of Mozambique between the 10th and the 14th of August seized a total of 1,025 bags of construction cement on the grounds of price speculation, an institution source said on Friday.
“They [economic agents] are charging exorbitant prices, and this trend is most noticeable in Maputo [capital] and Matola [in the south of the country]. They are the ones that end up influencing the other provinces,” INAE spokesman Tomás Timba said.
Inspections were carried out at 1,676 establishments across the country during that period, and resulted in fines for those found to be at fault.
Tomás Timba said that, in order to combat price speculation, action was being taken in the cities of Maputo and Matola, where there were the greatest number of instances.
“We want to clean things up here, so that this negative influence does not reach other provinces,” the INAE spokesman concluded.
