Fallen streetlight affects traffic on Eduardo Mondlane Avenue, in Maputo city
The northern part of Cabo Delgado province has been without electricity since the terrorists occupied the town of Mocímboa da Praia in August. The blackout of district capitals Mocímboa da Praia, Palma, Nangade and Mueda is due to sabotage at the Awasse substation, in the town of that name in Mocímboa da Praia district.
The poor security situation in the region is preventing the repair of the substation and the resumption of electricity supply there. Two attempts by Electricity of Mozambique (EDM) have been rebuffed by the terrorists.
According to sources, for example, generators and solar panels are the only sources of energy available in Palma, and a litre of gasoline for generators can cost up to 400 meticais, too much for most of the population.
To make matters worse, blockades on National Road No. 380 between the Palma village headquarters and the city of Pemba, and of the alternative road from Palma to Mueda via Nangade district, are constricting all trade.
So parlous is the situation, sources say, that those without access to a generator or solar panel are having to pay up to 100.00 meticais just to charge their cell phones.
