The Xiquitsi project has chosen to celebrate its 10-year centenary with the presentation of 10 concerts this year.
The commemorations will be held in three series, the first of which will comprise three concerts held on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, 27th-29th April.
The first concert will be a gala at the Municipal Council of Maputo on April 27th at 7:00 p.m.. The following day, at the same time, a concert will take place at the Franco-Mozambican Cultural Centre, and, finally, on April 29th at Maputo Cathedral, at 4:00 p.m..
A Xiquitsi project press release announces that the first series of concerts brings new material, with the presentation of the Moya string quintet, a piece written by former student and now teacher at Xiquitsi, Estêvão Chissano, which demonstrates one of the visible results of the project’s growth over the years.
During its first decade, the project has seen remarkable development, and currently offers classes for string, wind and percussion instruments, as well as musical instrument making and repair.
Currently, the Xiquitsi project is a true incubator of talents, with students undergoing training in higher education in Mozambique and overseas, in Portugal and Italy. Xiquitsi students often join music teaching institutions in the country, one of the main objectives for which the project was created.
Among the various milestones, the project has collaborated, over the years, with acclaimed national and foreign artists.
Xiquitsi was founded in March 2013 by the Kulungwana Association for Cultural Development and currently has more than 225 students, many children and young people.
Through its Cantate project, Xiquitsi has extended its initiative to the north of Mozambique, namely the provinces of Nampula (Ilha de Moçambique and Cidade de Nampula) and Cabo Delgado (Pemba).
