Né Afonso, one of the icons of Mozambican culture and radio drama, died in Portugal on Friday (May 13).
Lovingly known as ‘Tio Turutão’, Ernesto Edgar de Santana Afonso made his career with Television and Radio Mozambique, and was renowned for his Radiofónico Theatre output and children’s programs.
Born in Quelimane, Zambezia province, Santana Afonso came to the Mozambican capital to join the team of professionals at Radio Clube, honing his skills in Radiofónico Theatre through the Cena Aberta (Open Scene).
Broadcasting colleague Joao de Sousa says that Tio Tiritão leaves a legacy that should inspire young professionals.
In 1984, Afonso released an album of children’s songs titled “Sweet Dreams”, and a year later another dedicated to the ten years of national independence. “Viva 1 de Junho” is one of his most celebrated titles.
Rest in peace, Né Afonso.
