Three more groups of Mozambicans returned to work in South Africa’s gold and platinum mines during the past week, via a corridor opened by the authorities of the two countries in response to an agreement reached with the mining companies on the 7th of July.
@Verdade learned that a group of 66 Mozambicans travelled first, followed by another group of 211, and, on Friday, a further 106 citizens left, in an operation compliant with Covid-19 health safety and prevention rules.
South African mines employ about 45,000 miners from neighbouring countries, of which approximately 12,000 are from Mozambique.
South Africa continues to stand out as the epicentre of the pandemic, with a cumulative of 511,485 infections and 8,366 deaths, as of this Monday (03).
Meanwhile, the Mozambican Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation revealed that, in the week of July 17-24, two Mozambicans living and working in South Africa have died of Covid-19.
One of the deceased was a man in the 40-44 age group in South Africa on a work assignment, and the other a miner in the 50-55 age group.
