The Christian Council of Mozambique (CCM), a coalition of Christian churches, yesterday called on Mozambicans to avoid healers and fortune-tellers in case of symptoms of the new coronavirus, and, contrary to traditional beliefs rooted in the population, rather go to health units.
“We know that our tradition is to go to the healer or fortune-teller first. But in this case, our appeal is: go to the health unit,” CCM secretary general Felicidade Cherindza said on Radio Mozambique.
Cherindza said there was no solution to the Covid-19 pandemic outside hospitals, adding that there is no vaccine against the disease.
“Going to the healer or fortune-teller is not going to help,” she emphasised.
The CCM secretary-general said that Mozambican religious confessions were preparing for the resumption of services under conditions which ensure the prevention of Covid-19.
“Each of the religious denominations will have to create conditions for services to take place with the necessary social distancing, disinfection and hygiene of its members,” Cherindza said.
Faiths would appoint teams from among themselves to monitor compliance with coronavirus prevention measures.
Mozambican religious leaders recently met President Nyusi, along with officials from the Ministry of Justice, Constitutional and Religious Affairs, to discuss the resumption of religious services within the scope of the easing of state of emergency measures.
