Mozambique: Electronic scams continue throughout the country
19 Mozambican students in China are in danger of being evicted from their accommodation in China as their scholarships come an end, even though there are no commercial flights for them to return home. But the Mozambican Embassy in China says that it is already working on the problem and that no one will be forced out.
As part of the Mandarin courses offered through the Confucius Institute at Eduardo Mondlane University, Mozambican students travel to China each year to learn more about Chinese culture and language.
The latest batch of 19 students arrived in China in September last year, on scholarships that ended on July 3rd. At the end of the period, students Osvaldo Rocha and Maria Alice were told that they had to leave the premises they were living in.
The pair sought the support of the Mozambican embassy before their scholarships expired, but were told only to wait, receiving no further communication.
Contacted by ‘O País’, the embassy’s education attaché, António Gaspar, reassured us.
The Confucius Institute in Maputo has said that it is working with its Chinese counterpart to ensure that students have accommodation, food and subsidies until a flight is arranged for their return to Mozambique.
