Mozambique: Moreira Chonguiça celebrates International Jazz Day at Maputo Central Hospital
Mozambican rapper and social activist Simba Sitoi has been selected to appear at one of the most prestigious hip hop events in the world, the A3C Festival taking place from 5 to 9 October in the US city of Atlanta.
Simba will share the stage with successful artists from the worldwide hip hop scene including Red Man, Rick Ross, Bone Thugs N ‘Harmony, Erick Sermon, Robert Glasper, Ryan Leslie, Royce 5’9, Bun B and Cam’ron.
The A3C Festival is a concert, art and conference platform that seeks to use music to address various aspects of humanity and rap as a tool for the transformation of society.
Sitoi sees the invitation as an both an incentive and as recognition for his work that will probably give his career in an increasingly international perspective. His participation is proof that the US is aware of the ability of young African artists to influence the world and enrich the music industry.
This is not Simba’s first international experience but it has significant meaning for him, as the first contact he had with hip hop culture was via American rappers. By way of recognition, he and Milton Gulli have produced an album called “The Heroes”, a tribute to A Tribe Called Quest, listed among the 20 best albums released by BBE in 2013.
DJ kenzhero, the South African producer he has been working with for years, will accompany Simba to the festival. Simba and Kenshero made the collective ‘mix tape’ ‘Jozambique’ together.
Simba was born in Maputo on 21 October 1980. He grew up listening to the sounds of Ghorwane, Lionel Richie, Roberto Carlos and Michael Jackson. His passion for hip hop began in 1993, when he saw the American bands “De La Soul” and “A Tribe Called Quest”, but he only began to think seriously about meshing this world years later, since when he has never stopped.
