Mozambique: 'We Killed Mangy Dog and Other Stories' 60 years on; book of essays launched in Maputo ...
Screen grab: Khronic
Mozambican rapper Khronic is promoting his new album, “Linha do Tempo Vol I” [Timeline, Vol I], With his latest promotion just made available on digital platforms. ‘Quatro Estações’ [Four Seasons] is the 7th track on the album, and features hip-hop legend Masta Ace.
The song, recorded in both Mozambique and the United States of America, makes an analogy between the different seasons of the year and the constant changes in the state of mind inherent in worldly experience – the seasons of life.
“It’s a comparison between the ups and downs, the lessons learned, the stages of maturation and the way in which we deal with these changes. Not only nature but life itself goes through these cycles and, if these are well understood, it becomes much easier to take life in good spirit,” Khronic explains.
The participation of veteran New York hip hop rapper Masta Ace resulted from Khronic’s trip to the United States, where he was able to get to know up close the alleys through which his musical references built their careers.
“It was an honour and a special pleasure to work with someone who I have always idolised since I identified myself with hip hop, with rap, and also because the dynamics of the United States are different from those of Mozambique,” Khronic says.
“For us it is always a great surprise and it was a very simple job. I was able to talk a little more than music, I got to know a little bit of Brooklyn, I went to visit the Notorious B.I. area, the Jay-Z area, and the areas where big concerts took place. I carry good memories of that trip”.
With production by fellow countryman Hermetiko, ‘Quatro Estações’ is now available on all streaming platforms, and a video clip can be viewed on Khronic’s YouTube channel.
The first volume of Linha do Tempo was released on May 12th and features recording notables from the Portuguese-speaking universe, such as countrymen Duas Karas, Hernâni da Silva and Mark Exodus; the Guinean Mikas Cabral, the Portuguese Mundo Segundo and FUSE, and the Cape Verdean Ga daLomba.
Masta Ace, the M.O.P. (Mash Out Posse), a hip hop duo composed of East Coast rappers Billy Danze and Lil’ Fame, and Outlawz, a group that came to prominence through working on several Tupac projects, including posthumous ones, close the list of North American collaborators.
