President Filipe Nyusi yesterday expressed his intention to cooperate with Mauritius in the area of mineral resources, highlighting the potential that Mozambique has in the sector.
“There is a possibility of cooperation in this area. We want those responsible for these sectors in both countries to discuss possibilities for cooperation,” the Mozambican head of state said after signing three cooperation agreements between the two countries, during a three-day state visit to Mauritius.
Despite the focus on mineral resources, where Mozambique has “enormous potential”, Filipe Nyusi argued that cooperation should not be confined to this sector, noting that “you can’t eat gas”.
“Gas is important, but the production of food is much more important for us,” President Nyusi said.
The three agreements signed yesterday focus on the tourism, environmental and investment promotion sectors.
In the area of tourism, the agreement will allow cooperation in promoting both countries as attractive tourist destinations, as well as mutual technical assistance in the field of tourism marketing.
With regard to investment promotion, the agreement aims to promote the strengthening of trade and institutional relations, as well as the exchange of experience in the sector. Finally, the environmental memorandum defines the protection and conservation of mineral resources as a priority in both countries.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, the Prime Minister of Mauritius, Pravind Kumar Jugnauth, said the agreements represented a willingness to increase cooperation.
“These agreements show the interest we have in improving our relations and mark the start of this process,” he said.
