Filipe Nyusi will be in Germany from Monday (April 18) in his first visit as President of Mozambique, since taking office in early 2015, reports Deutsche Welle. His stay in Berlin ends on Wednesday (April 20) and Nyusi will then fly to Brussels for a two-day visit, where he is expected to hold several meetings, namely with Jean-Claude Juncker, President of the European Commission.
In 2015 Germany ceased to contribute to the general state budget of Mozambique. According to Berlin, this does not mean the end of German aid, but that funds will channelled directly to specific areas.
On Thursday, president Nyusi starts a two-day visit to Brussels where he will hold talks with the heads of major European institutions on the political and economic crisis in Mozambique, Lusa reports.
“It is an opportunity to find a space for dialogue at the highest level with the European Union [EU], focusing on the economic crisis, which joins the political crisis,” the representative of the European bloc in Maputo told Lusa.
According to Sven von Burgsdorff, Nyusi’s first official visit to Brussels, follows on visits to other major European partners of Mozambique, Portugal and France, in July last year.
This week’s visit was confirmed in February, during the visit to Maputo of the High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, who at the time warned that the political instability in Mozambique threatens the country’s achievements in recent decades.
The new political and military crisis in Mozambique, associated with the difficulties of the economy, is “a major challenge for the Mozambican authorities and people,” noted the head of the EU’s delegation in Maputo, adding that Nyusi’s presence in Brussels will also be “an opportunity to speak frankly about these challenges and look for the best way to solve them. “
Scheduled in the Mozambican Head of State’s agenda are meetings with the President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Federica Mogherini, with President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, and European Council President, Donald Tusk.
