Police in Manica, central Mozambique, have seized 270 litres of diesel hidden in a house and detained two men suspected of illegally selling fuel, a police spokesman told Lusa on Thursday.
The suspects were arrested early on Wednesday on the outskirts of Chimoio, in an area not usually associated with the business, which more often takes place along the main roads to countries in the African interior, said Mateus Mindu of Manica police command.
The men were caught with several drums of fuel in a tiny compartment of a house that functioned as an illegal fuel station, he explained.
“The action resulted from an operation to combat the illegal sale of fuel,” Mindu said. Police have been instructed to stop the activity, which has led to fatal accidents from improper handling of flammable materials.
The most serious case in Mozambique occurred in Caphiridzange, Tete province, in November 2016, when 115 people died during a collective raid on a tanker truck that exploded.
