Mozambican police says FDS rescued 14-year-old captured by Renamo, used as sex slave

The police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) have rescued a 14-year-old girl who had been captured by Renamo in the Chiuala region of Bàrué district in Manica province and used as a sex slave at a Renamo base there, AIM Moçambique reports.

PRM spokeswoman in Manica, Elsídia Filipe told reporters on Monday that the girl was abducted a few days ago in Chiuala, a Renamo bastion, and taken to a military base where she was delivered to a chief to use as his wife.

“The minor was taken and handed over to a commander. She was used as a sex slave. The commander made her his wife. The commander is a man over 50 years old, with whom she went to bed,” Filipe said.

According to Filipe, the Defence and Security Forces (FDS), apprised of the situation, tightened its hold in the region, forcing the guerrillas to free the girl, who has now been reunited with her family.

Filipe said that the operation also recovered assets including cattle from the Renamo men.

“We also recovered goods that we believe have been stolen from the population, including cattle. We are now working to return them to their rightful owners,” she explained.

Renamo is the largest opposition party in Mozambique and, since the end of last year, has been launching armed attacks on civilian and military vehicles and sowing a climate of insecurity in the centre of the country.

The Renamo actions support its claim to govern in six of the country’s eleven provinces, where it says it obtained the largest number of votes in the 2014 elections.

The Chiuala area has recently been the scene of armed incursions by men of Afonso Dlhakama’s party, causing the displacement of hundreds of families to safer areas. Many families have abandoned their homes, grazing and crop fields, and schools and hospitals have closed.

In addition to Chiuala, Renamo has been carrying out incursions in Manica, Mossurize (south) and Tambara districts, in Manica province.
