The Mozambican police said on Tuesday that the arrest of Renamo members in Manica province was related to criminal cases, and rejected Renamo’s accusations of arbitrary action.
“These arrests are connected to criminal activities. It is not the prerogative of the police to make arbitrary detentions. It would be ridiculous for the police, who ensure law and order, to commit such abuses,” police spokesman Inacio Dina said at the corporation’s weekly press briefing.
Describing the case, Manica Police Commissioner Armando Change said on Saturday that the Renamo members were spreading “exaggerated misinformation”, and the police took measures to “calm the situation”.
The four, Change said, has announced that “tomorrow there will be an attack here, tomorrow there will be attack there, tomorrow we take off the head of that guy,” and argued that “[disinformation] is another kind of warfare” and leads to ” intimidation of members of the government”. He did not however specify what, if any, charges had been brought.
Regretting the deaths and destruction of property allegedly perpetrated by Renamo’s armed wing in the central region of Mozambique, Dina said that the security force escorts had largely contained their impact.
“We are encouraged by the declining impact of the attacks. The police have a permanent presence and are ready. The level of insecurity is probably lower, but we regret the attitude of these men who seem determined to sow grief in families.”
At a press conference on Tuesday, Renamo said it did not know who was responsible for the series of armed attacks on the roads in central Mozambique, while denouncing the murder and arrests of opposition party members.
