The Mozambican police are looking for the man who shot and killed the president of the Nampula City Council on the basis of a clear eyewitness descriptions, the force’s spokesman told Lusa.
“There are clear eyewitness descriptions of the individual who carried out the shooting,” police spokesman Inácio Dina said. “We are in possession of these descriptions and we have important witnesses.”
Dina said this information “could lead to the arrest of the suspect”.
Mahamudo Amurane, 44, a member of the MDM’s political commission and chairman of the City Council of Nampula, Mozambique’s fourth-largest city, was shot by a stranger.
The mayor was in the pharmacy he manages on the ground floor of his private residence when a man entered and fired.
“He was a tall young man, and took out his pistol a few feet from the mayor and shot him three times,” Saide Ali, a councillor who was with the mayor when he was shot.
Amurane participated in Peace and Reconciliation Day celebrations marking the 25th anniversary of the signing of the Mozambique peace agreements on the morning of his death.
After the ceremonies, he went home, where he dismissed the police bodyguard he is entitled to by law, Dina told Lusa.
Amurane was shot at about 7:00 p.m. by a man armed with a pistol.
“When the police arrived, they found two men, a councillor and a local businessman, assisting the victim,” Dina said.
The police immediately launched a search for the suspect.
Dina said it was premature to speculate on a possible motive for the crime, but that the police were considering all lines of investigation in order to solve the case as soon as possible.
In a telephone conversation with O Pais, Dina said that, after attending Peace Day ceremonies, Amurane dismissed his bodyguard and went home. The reasons for his doing so and the possible existence of another person who contributed to the security lapse were among the lines of research under consideration.
Meanwhile, police are asking anyone with information that could assist in the investigation to come forward and share it with the authorities.
Amurane’s murder is the first case of a mayor losing his life in such circumstances.
