The Mozambican police yesterday accused the armed wing of Renamo, the main opposition party, of mounting five attacks in Manica and Sofala provinces in the centre of the country last week.
“Five attacks were perpetrated by armed Renamo [Mozambique National Resistance] men in the districts of Mossurize Báruè, Catandica in Manica province and Nhamatanda in Sofala,” a statement from the General Command of the Police of the Republic of Mozambique (PRM) reads.
In its weekly activity report, the PRM says that the Defence and Security Forces successfully repelled the alleged attackers.
“In order to maintain a climate of order, security and tranquillity, the PRM calls on all citizens to participate by reporting all acts which threaten public order,” the note reads.
Although the Mozambican government and Renamo have made progress in the weeks since resuming the negotiations on an end to the fighting, mutual accusations of attacks and political have not ceased.
The Mozambican government and the main opposition party have agreed on the participation of international mediators in negotiations, after the government had initially rejected the Renamo.
The main opposition party refuses to accept the results of the 2014 general elections, claiming the right to govern in the six provinces where it says it secured victory in the poll.
