Mozambique Police (PRM) announced on Tuesday that it is bolstering forces fighting the armed groups that have carried out attacks in the northern province of Cabo Delgado. “What is currently happening is the reinforcement of our preventive measures, in order to avoid areas being devastated by the evildoers, who wish to perpetuate a scenario of disquiet,” PRM’s General Command spokesman Inacio Dina told a regular weekly press conference.
Dina pointed out that there were no attacks by armed groups in Cabo Delgado last week, and said authorities were encouraging people from villages affected by violence to return home.
Remote villages in the province of Cabo Delgado, located between 1,500 and 2,000 kilometres north of Maputo, have been wracked by violent attacks by unidentified people since October 2017, causing an undetermined number of deaths and internally displaced persons.
Groups that have attacked the villages have never made any claims or made known their intentions, but investigators suggest that the violence is linked to trafficking in heroin, ivory, rubies and wood. The attacks come at a time when investments by natural gas oil companies in the region are moving forward, although the attacks have not yet directly targeted any of the projects.
