A Frelimo initiative to revise the constitution which ran out of steam in the last parliamentary session is to be resumed in parliament.
The revision, which is thought to incorporate in the fundamental law aspects that correspond better to the current political and social reality of the country, already has the backing of Frelimo and the MDM, but Renamo is still showing caution.
Renamo, which is claiming the right to govern in the six provinces where it says it obtained the majority of votes in the 2014 elections, has previously seen its proposed amendments blocked as unconstitutional.
Afonso Dhlakama’s party says it can only support the initiative after seeing the proposal.
At present, constitutional reform is still just a proposal without a named proponent or specific details, and the matter will only develop during the fourth session of parliament, scheduled for within two months.
