The Mozambican non-governmental organisation Centre for Democracy and Development has created a Youth Hub in Montepuez, Cabo Delgado, which aims to “involve young people in finding solutions to their challenges”.
“We want young people to invest in their intellect, their energies and their collective action to overcome their challenges,” initiative coordinator Julião Matsinhe says in a statement distributed to the media on Friday.
The NGO simultaneously launched a project called ‘Building Youth Resilience to Drugs Trade’, an initiative financed by the Global Initiative Against Transnational Organised Crime Resilience Fund.
The project aims to sensitise communities about drug abuse, and create mechanisms to combat and report cases of drug trafficking in the region.
Both projects are being launched at a time when Cabo Delgado is in the spotlight due to the armed violence taking place since 2017 in some districts there.
The Mozambican government has announced several projects to create jobs for youth and prevent their recruitment by the groups carrying out the attacks.
Armed violence in Cabo Delgado, northern Mozambique, is causing a humanitarian crisis with around 2,000 deaths reported and some 500,000 people displaced, without adequate housing or food, mainly to the provincial capital, Pemba.
The province, where Africa’s largest natural gas investment has been in development for three years, has been under attack by insurgents, with some incursions since 2019 claimed, by the jihadist group Islamic State.

“I would like to say that there are many young people involved in the excessive consumption of alcohol here in Montepuez. And, therefore, I would like to thank the CDD for choosing this district to implement the project”, said a young participant from Montepuez. pic.twitter.com/tQ6FlA8HQD
