Mozambique music and the city of Beira are in mourning for the sudden death of renowned musician Armstrong Gonçalves, co-founder of the musical group ‘Banda os Djaakas’, who died on Saturday at the age of forty.
The death of Armstrong has shocked his fans and those closest to him. He appeared in good health on the 20th of August [this month] when he got married in the presence of family and friends with nothing to indicate the tragedy about to befall.
“He died at 4 p.m. on his way to hospital after complaining of feeling ill,” a family member revealed.
Prime Minister Carlos Agostinho do Rosario said he greatly regretted the musician’s death and characterized it as an irreparable loss, Armstrong having so brilliantly represented the country in a multitude of cultural events.
“Armstrong dies just as Beira is hosting the IX National Culture Festival, so I call on us all to honour his legacy as a musician and pass it to generations to come,” ((Agostinho) do) Rosario said.
