Information gathered by a delegation from the Mozambican Ministry of Labor, Employment and Social Security (MITESS) in South Africa indicates that, for the third year running, almost all of the Mozambican miners who came home for the festive season will find their jobs waiting for them in South Africa on their return.
In the spotlight are the approximately 33 000 Mozambican miners expected to return to South Africa on Monday, their passage smoothed by an announcement made on Friday that holders of passports with purely technical errors will not be refused entry.
A press release from MITESS sent to news agency AIM this Saturday says the 2015-2016 festive season has seen coordinated action between mining and agricultural companies, labor, and the immigration and customs authorities of both countries, including the introduction of a system of follow-ups at entry and exit points where miners and other Mozambican workers in South Africa get fast-track treatment.
The statement said the Mozambican government is conducting campaigns and issuing biometric documents to those of its citizens who live and work abroad, including miners in RSA.
Currently there is an ongoing process of issuing identification documents to workers who are in South Africa as well as verifying the status of those who are working without any documentation, especially on farms.
The documents necessary to comply with the South African government’s biometric document immigration requirements are issued, in case of miners, by mobile task forces sent directly to their workplace. Agricultural workers will be covered next.
The regions with the highest ratio of Mozambican miners in South Africa are Johannesburg Carltonville, Klerksdorp and Rustenburg, while Limpopo and Mpumalanga employ workers mainly in agriculture.
