Mozambican courts seized currency to the value of €8.9 million and 19 real estate properties last year on suspicion of them having been obtained through acts of corruption, Attorney General of the Republic Beatriz Buchili said in parliament on Wednesday.
Beatriz Buchili was speaking during the presentation of her annual report on legal oversight in 2020.
In addition to the money and property, justice authorities involved in the fight against corruption seized 99 movable assets, including 81 vehicles, 14 motor boats and four other small boats.
“The gains generated by criminal activities, in particular by corruption, have been pointed out as a deep-seated governance problem in most countries, with negative effects on combating poverty and promoting development,” Beatriz Buchili explained.
Still within the scope of the recovery of assets obtained through the practice of criminal activities, she continued, Mozambique had issued 12 requests for mutual legal assistance to nine countries, including Portugal and South Africa.
The public prosecutor said that one of the requests issued to South Africa related to the so-called “hidden debts” case, and another to gold bullion valued at R24 million (€1.39 million) removed from the country by two Mozambican citizens.
Another request made by Mozambique to the South African authorities for asset recovery concerns currency trafficking worth just over US$1.3 million (€1 million), transported from Maputo by three citizens of Pakistani nationality, Buchili added.
