The winners of the 22nd South African Music Awards were announced during a ceremony at the International Convention Centre in Durban, South Africa, last Saturday. Mozambique is represented among the world’s best by one of the most highly esteemed musicians in the land of the rand: Jimmy Dludlu, progenitor of a discography that has conquered the hearts of African/jazz lovers.
Jimmy took home a gold-plated statuette for “Live at Emperor’s Palace” in the “Best Live Audiovisual Recording” category.
Besides Mozambique, the list of SAMA winners includes Judith Sephuma (Best Album Adult Contemporary with “One Word”), Zahara (Best-produced Album with “Country Girl”), and Zonke (Female Artist of the Year, with “Work from Heart”).
The South Africa SAMA awards were established in 1995 and the ceremony is held in April or May, with the selection process starting in November of the previous year. Nominations are usually announced in late March and the winners receive a gold-plated statuette, the South African equivalent of the American Grammy.
The 22nd Annual South African Music Awards winners include: Duo or Group of the Year: Big Nuz – “For the Fans”; Male Artist of the Year: Nathi – “Buyelekhaya”; Best Rock Album: Desmond & The Tutus – “Enjoy Yourself”; Best Pop Album: Tresor – “VII”; Best Alternative Album: Petite Noir – “La Vie Est Belle / Life is Beautiful”; Best R & B/Soul/Reggae: Nathi – “Buyelekhaya”; Best Rap Album: Emtee – “Avery”; Best Contemporary Faith Music Album: Ntokozo Mbambo – “Spirit and Life” and Best Engineered Album: Black Coffee – “Pieces of Me”.

This is not the first time the Chamanculo star has achieved SAMA recognition, having taken “Best Jazz Album” in 2008.
