The Mozambican Ministry of Fisheries, Sea and Inland Waterways has announced that it will work towards enrolling more than 200,000 artisanal fishermen and women with the National Social Security Institute (INSS), so as to ensure the social protection of the sector’s professionals.
Minister Agostinho Mondlane, quoted by newspaper Notícias today, says that registering the fishermen in the INSS will protect them and their families in case of incapacity caused by work accidents, illness and death.
“We have been explaining to the fishermen the advantages of joining the Social Security scheme in the event of illness or old age, and also for their families in case of death,” Mondlane said.
Workers in the sector, he continued, work mostly on their own and have shown enthusiasm for the possibility of enrolling in the INSS.
“We are happy to note that fishermen are interested in signing up for the INSS,” he added.
