Mozambique: About 13M children living in poverty – Unicef
Following the announcement of cuts in aid to Mozambique’s state budget by the international community, the Mozambican government has apologized for having concealed debts, while simultaneously announcing cuts in grants to civil society.
The Maputo government shows itself inclined to cut the subsidies it gives annually to the civil society, in particular to associations of social and cultural nature , following the decision by Western donors to reduce their aid to the state budget of Mozambique for negligence in public accounts.
Last Friday May 13 Mozambican Finance Minister Adriano Maleiane publicly apologized for the existence of undisclosed state-guaranteed debts of US$622 million for 2013 and US$535 million for 2014.
These apologies came on the heels of a letter from the G14 group of donor countries announcing that it was suspending the disbursement of aid, as already had the IMF, which suspended the second tranche of a loan already agreed.
The government has since announced that it would no longer have funds to support a variety of social programs, and will announce cuts in subsidies to civil society organizations soon.
Mozambican economist Antonio Francisco however comments that the help the state provides is already so limited that any such suspension would be ineffectual.
