The National Road Administration of Mozambique (ANE) will grant private concessions to four sections of National Highway Number 1 (EN1), which links the three regions of the country, ANE national director Marco Vaz dos Anjos has said.
Quoted in today’s Notícias, Marco Vaz dos Anjos said that ANE would hand over two sections in southern Mozambique, namely Marracuene-Xai-Xai and Xai-Xai-Chissibuca, the Inchope-Caia stretch in the centre of the country, and Namialo-Metoro in the north.
“The dealers will invest in the rehabilitation and modernization of the sections, later installing toll gates and charging fees for their use by motorists,” said Anjos.
Anjos said that more sections of EN1 would be concessioned off at a later stage as a way of securing the efficiency of the main road.
The concessions are part of the “user-pays policy” aimed at ensuring the modernisation of the country’s road network.
Handing over the railways to private management could also be a way of addressing the difficulties that the government faces in maintaining the roads.
