The Ministry of Transport and Logistics of Mozambique announced in Beira today that studies are underway to solve the problems of truck congestion at the access to the city’s port, one of the most important in the country.
“As we all know, Beira is facing a huge challenge due to congestion in accessing the port. Therefore, we are studying mechanisms to find solutions for access,” João Matlombe told the media after visiting the port in Sofala province, central Mozambique.
Matlombe said that contacts were underway with the company responsible for managing the port (Cornelder de Moçambique), Mozambique Railways and the local business council, with the aim of studying solutions to the problem.
Among these is the possibility of creating alternative access routes, which Matlombe considers important but still requiring further study. “An alternative route is an important solution that is being studied,” he stressed.
In October 2023, the Mozambican government announced that it intended to invest US$290 million (€278 million) in the expansion and modernization of the Port of Beira, one of the most important in Mozambique, and which serves other countries in the region.
In that same year, Mozambican ports handled more than 63,000 tons of goods, an increase of 12.3% compared to 2022, practically half from Maputo, according to budget execution data to which Lusa had access at the time.
