The Mozambican Ministry of Health yesterday highlighted excessive alcohol consumption as the “main enemy” during the festive season, and pledged its readiness to deal with any emergency over the festive season.
“Alcohol is the main danger to health in the festive season. People consume too much, and we will ask the police authorities to be on the alert,” National Director of Medical Assistance of the Ministry of Health Ussene Isse said at a press conference.
Isse also cited food poisoning, high level of road accidents, domestic violence and rape as causes of concern to health officials during the Christmas season.
To address problems related to the Christmas and year-end holidays, the Ministry of Health will strengthen emergency teams, Isse said, adding that all health units would have the drugs and medical equipment necessary to cope with peak demand for services.
“Another important aspect is our appeal for blood donors, because the need for blood increases during the festive season,” he said.
National and international reports cite Mozambique as one of the worst in Africa for road accidents caused by drunk driving, lack of driver training, police corruption and the poor condition of vehicles and roads.
