The Mozambican government on Tuesday approved, by direct award to the Operation Water Mozambique company, the concession for eight water supply systems, Council of Ministers spokesman Filimão Suaze announced.
“These are places with chronic problems and without funding arrangements,” so the public-private partnership “is an excellent alternative”, Suaze said.
The planned investment is budgeted at US$23 million (€19 million), with the concession running for 30 years.
The company will be responsible for water supply systems in Macia, Nuvunguene, Marromeu, Machanga, Gurué, Morrumbala, Chimbonila and Nipepe.
The government foresees the measure bringing water to an additional 380,000 people.
Official figures indicate that only half of Mozambique’s approximately 30 million citizens have access to an adequate water supply.
