Mozambique’s Manica province expects to export 3,000 tons of avocado to Europe this year.
The avocado, which is processed locally and sold on the European market, is harvested from a production area of 2,500 hectares in Sussundenga and Catandica districts, central Mozambique.
Company general director Mike Jamme says that export destinations prefer avocados from Chimoio for their nutritional quality.
Visiting the firm this Thursday, Minister of Industry and Commerce, Carlos Mesquita, confessed himself very impressed with the export levels, but took exception to the company transporting its products by road from Chimoio to South Africa for export to Europe by air, which makes for accumulated handling losses.
Westfalia Fruto Moçambique, which already employs more than 150 workers, plans to increase export volumes from 3,000 to 8,000 tons over the next four years.
Menawhile, the company says that it has exported nearly 500 tons of other products processed in Mozambique to countries in Europe since 2015, with macadamia nuts and lichees featuring strongly.
