Mozambique: Return colonial era art only when African museums can keep it - artist

Fashion designer Shaazia Adam, will parade her new collection under the slogan Liberation, in Maputo, on Friday, 31 August, in the Garden of Acacias, at 7 pm. The event will count with the presence of models, designers, public figures, businesspeople, friends and family members of the designer.
The collection is inspired in the 50’s that were marked in world history. It was the end of the war and rationing of fabrics, which caused a revolution in fashion. Women recovered their femininity and stars such as Grace Kelly and Marlin Monroe glittered. This inspiring time is the reference for the “Liberation” collection of the young fashion designer, reflecting the feeling of being trapped inside her and the constant quest for freedom. The fashion designer did a trip back in time, bringing the past to the present, where women began to conquer their own place in society.
This is a collection made up of 30 pieces, where sophistication and elegance stand out, having the same been created thinking on women who dare to be free, independent and with own style.
Shaazia Adam, CEO and founder of the brand stated that: “when I created this collection, I thought of the women as being independent, elegant, sophisticated and above all with authentic style. I want my pieces showing the strength and courage that the women of my country have, with the functionality, quality, style, embroidered and outstanding details in this collection, for women of my country to continue to convey the strength and courage they have with style, elegance and joy of living, because that’s how I see them”.
Born and raised in Mozambique, it was at the age of 12 that Shaazia Adam realized that she had a passion for fashion, design and fabrics and so she began to devote herself to arts and fashion, while still in school. She attended Cinderella and Maputo International School.
In 2010, the young fashion designer moved to London, where she wanted to make her passion for fashion into reality. She graduated at Marangoni Institute, one of the most prestigious fashion schools in the world. The young designer also had the opportunity to intern at the prestigious Atelier Alexander McQueen, which actually was a great and rich experience for her.
With 11 years of career, the brand ‘Shaazia Adam’ has been in existence since 2007. The young designer opened her first shop in Maputo, in 2015, dedicated to ready-to-wear, after an early career that began with Haute Couture.
Shaazia’s work is recognised nationally and internationally, after several appearances on the Mozambique Fashion Week, Portugal Fashion Week, Riccione Fashion Italy and Plitz Fashion New York Fashion Week, among other fashion sceneries.
